What is a Confucius Institute (CI)?

In May 2007, Yunnan Radio & TV University (YNRTVU) and Metropolitan State College of Denver (Metro State), submitted a grant application for $150,000 in startup funds to Hanban, translated in English as The Office of Chinese Language Council International, a non-profit organization located in Beijing.

With an estimated 100 million people worldwide speaking Chinese by 2010, Hanban intends to fund approximately 100 Confucius Institutes (CI). It is hoped that CIs will engender better communication with the Chinese and promote enhanced understanding of their culture. Each CI around the globe is matched with a Chinese higher education institution. Confucius Institutes offer Chinese language courses, support education and certification of Chinese language teachers, provide information and services about Chinese education, culture, economy and society, and promote research about contemporary China.

Metro State looks forward to the benefits that students, faculty, staff, and community will reap from developing a CI with YNRTVU. The CI will serve as a resource for metropolitan Denver, Colorado, and Region 8. The CI partnership will also strengthen relationships with our Chinese colleagues.
