College’s off-campus gallery features Christo and Jeanne-Claude

World-renowned artists present free lecture on Sept. 18

Denver - Metropolitan State College of Denver's Center for Visual Art (CVA) has become the little gallery that could and did, by securing an exhibition of original works by world-renowned artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

The CVA will host the exhibition “Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects,” Aug. 29 through Nov. 1. This exclusive exhibition of 130 original works has not been seen in the United States since 1992 and features 30 new pieces. The exhibition includes a Sept. 18 free public lecture, which the artists are presenting as a gift to the CVA. The lecture will be held at the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

It’s a major coup for the 18-year-old gallery, whose many exhibits are curated by faculty in the College’s nationally-accredited Art Department. “We are excited and humbled by the opportunity for our faculty, 950 art students and the community to have access to the exhibit and artists’ lecture,” says CVA Director and Curator Jennifer Garner. “Our exhibition provides Coloradans a front-row seat to the artists’ work as they plan their ‘Over The River’ installation, slated for 2012 in Colorado’s Arkansas River Valley.”

Four years is not so far away, considering it reportedly took 26 years to exhibit “The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005.” For the CVA, the wait wasn’t so long. “It all began with me picking up the phone and calling the artists,” says Garner. “Now less than two years later, the exhibition is kicking off at one of the most historic times in Colorado history with the Democratic National Convention.”

This three-month-long exhibition officially kicks off fundraising efforts for the CVA to purchase and renovate its current building and the adjacent gallery. The CVA already has received a lead $425,000 challenge grant from the Boettcher Foundation.
